March 22: Spring Flower Photowalk

It’s springtime in Southern California, and that means a photowalk to watch all the new flowers!

Our photo walk will be at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada (map), starting at 9am on Saturday, March 22nd.

Attendance is free but entrance to the gardens is $9.00. Please RSVP on Meetup, and we’ll meet in front of the Visitor Center (A on this map).

You’re welcome to roam the gardens on your own, or follow Daniel or Greg who will offer picture taking tips (Here are some photos Daniel took a few years ago)

After working up an appetite, we’ll adjourn to a nearby cafe for brunch/lunch and sharing our photos and experiences.

See you then!

Take note of the following photography limitations:

No flash photography or tripods are permitted in the buildings although tripods may be used in the Gardens. No photography of any kind is permitted in the Sturt Haaga Gallery. Additional photographic equipment is prohibited (lights, reflectors, props, costumes, models, etc.), except under commercial contract. Amateur photographers may not use their representations of the Gardens for any public or commercial purpose unless approved by the Descanso Gardens Guild, Inc.

Worldwide Photo Walk: October 5 at Sunset, El Porto Beach

It’s official: LADIG will be participating in the Worldwide Photowalk, Saturday October 5th.

Sunset is at 6:32pm on October 5, so we’ll meet at 5:15pm for some golden light and end at 7:30, which is Nautical Twilight. It’s about two hours after low tide. After that we’ll retire to a local bar at the intersection of Highland and Rosecrans for some food and a look at our shots.

El Porto Beach offers a number of interesting photography opportunities. There’s the beach of course, and the sunset; there are also surfers (bring a long lens), bicyclists & rollerbladers (this is on the Marvin Braude bike path), lifeguard towers and rocks, plus stately beachfront homes and a power plant. Not much in the way of vegetation.

Weather permitting, you will have a view from Palos Verdes on the south to Malibu on the north including the Manhattan Beach Pier, Santa Monica and planes taking off from LAX.

El Porto Beach, at the north end of Manhattan Beach is accessible from Vista Del Mar (from the north) or Highland Ave (from the south) — it changes names at 45th St.

Here’s a map:

Probably the easiest way for most folks is to take the 105 Fwy West all the way to the end. It turns into Imperial Highway, which eventually dead ends at Vista Del Mar. Go South and 45th st. is a mile or two on the right; watch for the Chevron station at the corner.

Go down 45th St. to the beach parking lot. Parking is $1.50/hr and the meters accept credit cards as well as quarters. There is 5 hour parking, so if you’re up for a little more walking you can park here all the way through dinner; otherwise there is another parking structure closer to the restaurants.

The Walk:

The walk itself will be on completely flat terrain, there will be some optional clambering on the rocks – wouldn’t really call it rock climbing though. You should be able to avoid getting wet, but expect moisture from surf spray. We’ll be walking on pavement, sand and rocks. Usually there is some moderate wind.

There is a significant incline from the parking lot to the restaurant if you choose to walk there afterwards.

It’s Free, so…

DeLab Walking Tour of Culver City, Sunday April 14

This is not an LADIG event, but I thought members would find it interesting:

Join us for a walking tour of Culver City in partnership with our good friends at KCRW’s DnA: Design and Architecture as part of an exciting full day of events celebrating the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A at the historic Helms Bakery.

Our two-hour guided tour will focus on contemporary design and architecture, stopping by the area’s newest buildings, studios and stores, and meeting many of the creatives who are transforming the city into one of the most exciting pockets of L.A. We’ll check out the new digs of Morphosis and Clive Wilkinson Architects, hear from Eric Owen Moss about the legacy and future of theConjunctive Points and Hayden Tract developments, and peek inside the beautiful Arcana Books space, designed by Johnston Marklee. Plus, we’ll be joined by Culver City planner Joshua Williams, who can answer all your burning questions about the smart urban design and planning that makes this city shine.

The tour will end at Helms Bakery at noon, just in time for you to grab a bite at one of the food trucks before an afternoon of design and architecture events hosted by DnA’s Frances Anderton. There will be two panel discussions, live music from KCRW DJ Liza Richardson, a pop-up gallery of design curated by DnA’s new “DJs” (design journalists), food available for purchase by Let’s Be Frank, and more! Tickets for the afternoon events are available at
