June 26: LADIG Presents Ralph Nelson – Botanica Project

Long-time motion picture photographer Ralph Nelson visits LADIG to talk about his latest project: a Kickstarter funded book titled “BOTANICA iPhone photos”.

The book combines two of Nelson’s lifelong loves – nature and photography.

All of the photos are of botanical subjects.

And every photo was taken with an iPhone.

Ralph will talk about his work, both behind the camera and behind the scenes making a successful publication and a successful Kickstarter project.

Our June Event takes place in a new location: Plummer Park Community Center in West Hollywood (map). The entrance is on Santa Monica Blvd at Martel Ave, and it looks like there is adequate parking on-site with additional parking available at the north end of the park (accessible from Fountain Ave).

Wed, May 15: Explore the world of Inkjet Paper

LADIG presents: The World of Inkjet Paper

LADIG is happy to announce a special presentation by Eric Joseph at Freestyle Photographic Supplies in Hollywood, a survey of the range of fine photographic papers available for digital inkjet printing.

Eric will showcase over 100 photographs while discussing the technical points and aesthetic differences of inkjet papers from the following brands: Arista, Awagami, Canson, Hahnemuhle, Ilford, Moab and Museo. Participants will gain keen insight into the technical aspects, myths and mysteries of digital printing through both lecture and interactive participation.

The focus of this seminar is to get participants to understand how important The Print really is and to realize that we truly can have a personal bond and relationship with inkjet papers the same way we had with traditional darkroom papers.

Eric Joseph has been a member of Freestyle Photographic Supplies for the past 25 years after receiving his BA in Photography from Cal State Northridge. He works with all the manufacturers of photo paper – both analog and digital – and has a unique perspective on the state of the art of photographic paper.

This is a one-of-a-kind seminar and applies to photographers, printmakers, graphic designers and artists of all levels!

The event is free, but sign up here so we know how many people to expect.

DeLab Walking Tour of Culver City, Sunday April 14

This is not an LADIG event, but I thought members would find it interesting:

Join us for a walking tour of Culver City in partnership with our good friends at KCRW’s DnA: Design and Architecture as part of an exciting full day of events celebrating the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A at the historic Helms Bakery.

Our two-hour guided tour will focus on contemporary design and architecture, stopping by the area’s newest buildings, studios and stores, and meeting many of the creatives who are transforming the city into one of the most exciting pockets of L.A. We’ll check out the new digs of Morphosis and Clive Wilkinson Architects, hear from Eric Owen Moss about the legacy and future of theConjunctive Points and Hayden Tract developments, and peek inside the beautiful Arcana Books space, designed by Johnston Marklee. Plus, we’ll be joined by Culver City planner Joshua Williams, who can answer all your burning questions about the smart urban design and planning that makes this city shine.

The tour will end at Helms Bakery at noon, just in time for you to grab a bite at one of the food trucks before an afternoon of design and architecture events hosted by DnA’s Frances Anderton. There will be two panel discussions, live music from KCRW DJ Liza Richardson, a pop-up gallery of design curated by DnA’s new “DJs” (design journalists), food available for purchase by Let’s Be Frank, and more! Tickets for the afternoon events are available at KCRW.com

April 3 Event: Eric Curry

LADIG: Eric Curry

LADIG welcomes back Eric Curry to our April 3 meeting at West Hollywood Park Hall. Eric going to present his series of photographs of American Pride and Passion.

Eric literally paints with light to create his photographs. He says, “I am basically taking 25 years of technical special effects photographic knowledge and applying it to objects that we all take for granted in our daily lives.  Not shooting images of new “toys” per se, but rather whole scenes of regular objects in their environment.  Truly believing that beauty is all around us, we just have to look with a slightly different pair of colored glasses to see it. I’m hoping that the huge amount of energy I pour in to each and every work will help illuminate the inherent beauty in these otherwise average scenes.

With over  slides and dozens of anecdotal stories woven into a presentation, this is a wild ride of cutting edge photography, along with a true glimpse at the nobility of character embodied by the volunteers in these images.”

This month LADIG also introduces a new Lightroom: Before & After feature. Daniel Sofer and Lee Varis share a photograph and show how they created it in Adobe Lightroom (and sometimes Photoshop), so you can learn more from the official Los Angeles Adobe Lightroom User Group.

Greg Dyro will also show his latest Wacky Hacks.

Our April event will be held at the West Hollywood Park Auditorium. Doors open at 6pm for some finger food and conversation, then we’ll get rolling around 7pm.

Parking is available at the new West Hollywood Public Library at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., directly south of our meeting location.
