Eric Curry, Painting with Light…

Eric Curry was born in Los Angeles in 1956.  He states that he was raised on sugary breakfast cereals, and Saturday morning cartoons, with a healthy dose of “Gilligan’s Island ” re-runs thrown in for good measure.  Graduating from the public school system with a solid “C” grade point average, he was clearly destined for greatness, or at least a career in the visual arts.  Continuing on and completing the curriculum from Art Center College of Design in 1980 with a BA in photography. Eric was originally trained and specialized in studio still life/special effects photography. After graduating from Art Center , he ran his own advertising photography studio based in Copenhagen , Denmark for 12 years, returning to the states in 1992.

Eric made the transition to location industrial photography because it affords, as he comments, “A much broader pallet of avenues for creativity.” Coming full circle, it seems appropriate that Eric through this series of art/documentary images is now the one making his own visual statement of who and where we are as a nation. Not at all art for the masses, but as he refers to it, “Hyper-photographic industrial art that everybody can enjoy looking at.” Currently Mr. Curry creates photographs exclusively on location for select clients and himself, taking full advantage of the depth and possibilities afforded by each and every new challenge. Curry’s work was recently exhibited in the “Newer Topographics: Photographs of Digitally Altered Urban Landscapes” at the California Museum of Photography at UC Riverside.

Eric likes to say he exposes the real heroes in our everyday lives. He sheds light (lots of light) on people of integrity, character and passion… along with some pretty COOL automobiles, planes, and other moving machines whether it’s a ‘56 Ford Pickup, B-25 Bomber, Bradley Fighting Machine, Corvette, Crop Duster, DC-3, F-102, Long Haul Truck, Navy Hardsuit (Atmospheric Diving System) or Telescope. His wonderful stories are just as colorful as his large-scale multiple exposures.

Join us at the Digital Fusion Pro Center on Feb 10th, 6:30 PM for an unforgettable evening of superlative digital imagery.

New Changes to LADIG Website

Published by hermosawave under LADIG News

Hi All:

I’ve just been handed “the keys” to the LADIG website, with a mandate to make the site more useful and interesting. Look for lots of changes in the weeks ahead!

One of the things Lee and I have discussed is that a digital imaging website needs… digital images!  So if you’re an LADIG member and would like to have one or two of your images featured on the site, please contact me at photos@hermosawavephotography.com.  I’ll post specifications and a process to automate this soon.

I hope to have lots of photos on the site, in a slide show on the home page and in other areas.

Best wishes for Happy Holidays (and hoping the Santas over at Samy’s Camera get me my 5DII soon!)

Holiday Print Swap

Published by Varis under LADIG News

I’ve introduced a new category for posts concerning the group’s activities. We’ll use this LADIG News category to talk about what has been happening and what we’d like for the future. Anything related to USDIG/LADIG events or other activities as well as the news surrounding individual members activities – like shows, exhibits, or talks and seminars.  To kick this off, I’d like to offer a review of our holiday party. This past December 11th we had our annual Holiday Party & Print Swap at Anthony Nex’s studio in the Helms Building Annex. Board member extraordinaire, Richard Kephart supplied his special home made chili for dinner and various members brought additional holiday spirits to supplement the usual sodas and water refreshments. The focus of the party was the member print swap. We had several tables where members spread out their prints. Anyone that brought a print could negotiate a swap with anyone with another print to swap. We did this last year and as last time it was a big success. There was also a continuos slideshow of members work and this all contributed to a great environment for sharing. It was really great to see all the good work that members are producing. Guests were welcome and I saw quite a few new faces –I hope most will continue to support the LADIG at regular events.  We also tried out a little game we called “Whose Picture is it Anyway” where the audience had to guess who among 3 or 4 different people was really responsible for the picture. I’m not sure this was that successful – the audience had some initial difficulty in deciding between two of the contestants but by the end everyone had guessed correctly – but it was fun hearing the rather outlandish stories told by the contestants.I’m hoping to receive some photos from the event and once I do I’ll post them here (hint for other bloggers who attended the party). All in all, the print swap was a big success –I came prepared and I walked away with a lot of really cool images for my collection. I would love to hold more community building events like this that focus on members images. Maybe we can do a “Show and Tell” kind of event where people get up and talk about a cool image they created. Lets talk!
